FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the weather like?

Fabulous!  We have an average year round day time temperature of about 78 degrees Fahrenheit or 25 Celsius.  It is humid here, but not overwhelming as we get a nice breeze.  At night it can be a bit chilly by the river, so we recommend bringing some pants and a sweater or light jacket.  We don’t have seasons per se, but it is rainier some months more than others, but I haven’t figured out which yet.

Do you have private accommodations?

The retreats are double or triple occupancy but you may ask for availability on private rooming. This will depend on the number of participants and availability. There will be an extra charge for private accommodations if available.

Can I drink the water?

Yes! Our water comes from our own underground natural spring, and it is filtered before getting to us. We have additional filters if you like, but it’s not necessary.

Can I swim in the river?

Yes! There is a neighborhood association that has agreed to protect the river.  We’ve had it tested and it is safe for swimming.

Do I need cash or is there an ATM nearby?

We take payments for bookings in USD via credit card, bank transfer, or PayPal.  We can also take cash payments in USD.

We take payments in Colombian Pesos via transfer to Bancolombia or in Effectivo.

We can change your USD to local currency or vice versa; the rate depends on the current exchange rate.

There are ATMs in Barbosa.

How do I use a composting toilet?

Don’t worry!  Instructions are provided in the bathrooms.  Most importantly, do not put any paper in these or any other toilet here at Origen EcoResort.  All paper, sanitary napkins, etc., need to go in the trash bin.  Please pee towards the front of the toilet, as pee goes through a filter and back to the earth right away.  After depositing your solids, please put a scoop of wood shavings on top; this will eliminate any smell.  The solids are then used later as compost for the flowers and trees.

What is Karma Yoga, and why do I have to do it?

Karma Yoga – it is the selfless giving of oneself through the medium of work and stems from love which finds fulfillment in pure giving without thought of self-gain or acknowledgement.  We ask everyone who comes to the farm to contribute, not just consume.  Your contributions can be helping in the gardens, or giving love to the animals.  There are many ways to perform karma yoga here.

Do you have hot water showers?

Yes, of course we do.  The cabins have propane water heaters and the house has electric.

Can you accommodate my food allergies/special diet?

Generally, this is not a problem at all.  Please make sure to let us know well before your visit so we can make sure we have the correct items for you.

Do you have pet allergy free rooms?

The animals are a big part of this farm.  Here in the main house, there are cats who may be on the couch or sneak in a sleep on top of a bed.  The cabins are shut when not in use, so you are less likely to find an animal there; however, all sheets and blankets are washed together.

I don't like animals, are they always around?

The dogs are always here, and they love everyone.  They don’t jump but love belly rubs.  If you don’t like dogs, this may not be the best place for you.  Gus makes his presence known, and Mr. Peacock likes to visit new folks.  The ducks love peas and will eat out of your hands, the chickens love to cuddle.  Take advantage of the free love while you can.

Can I bring my kid?

We have special events for families, but our retreats are typically for adults only.

What should I bring?

You will get more specifics with your information packet for your retreat, but the following items are useful here:  swimsuit, headlamp, reusable water bottle, insect repellent, light hiking shoes or water shoes, pants and a light jacket.

Is there nightlife nearby?

Unless its a special tasting event, we don’t serve alcohol here at the resort.  There is a small store right down the street, it is a local gathering spot; they have beer and aguardiente, and some fabulous chicken empanadas.  There are some bars in Barbosa, it’s an interesting look into country life.  You would need to take a taxi as the last bus leaves at 6:00 pm.

I'd like to bring a gift, any suggestions?

Sometimes we receive emails of participants asking what would we like or need from other countries. So here are some things we love that we are unable to find here. It is always a pleasure to receive them:  Taco Bell Hot Sauce, Temptations Hairball Cat Treats, Extra Sharp Cheddars or other fancy cheeses, and mint Fluoride Free toothpaste.  Asdrubal’s children love toys that center around building or art.
